Papa Pio II.

Papa Pio II.(pontifikat 1458. – 1464.) - osnovao Otočku biskupiju, bio je veliki poticatelj otpora protiv osmanlijskih najezda u Europi. Kako su Frankopani bili u izuzetnim odnosima s ovim papom,papa je 5. ožujka 1460. g. bulom uspostavio Otočku biskupiju, a Otočac proglasio gradom (civitas). No uspostava Otočke biskupije nije bio odraz samo dobrih odnosa pape s Frankopanima, bio je to odraz njegove politike da se uspostavom novih biskupija pridonese konsolidaciji cijeloga prostora u sprječavanju prodora Osmanlija. Pokušao je organizirati protiv njih križarski rat pa je 1459. u Mantovu sazvao europske vladare. No podrška je bila nikakva i ovaj rat nikada nije realiziran. Ostat će zabilježen kao jedini papa (vladar) koji je u 15. st. bio voljan suzbiti Osmanlije u prodoru na Zapad. Lik je izradio kipar Šime Vidulin iz Pule.;

Pope Pius II (pope from 1458 to 1644) – He established the Bishopric of Otočac, and was a great supporter of resistance against the Ottomans in Europe. As the Frankopans were in excellent relations with Pius II, this pope issued a papal bull on 5 March 1460, establishing the Bishopric of Otočac, and proclaiming Otočac a town (civitas). But the establishment of the Bishopric of Otočac was not only a reflection of good relations between the pope and the Frankopans, but also a reflection of his policy that the establishment of new dioceses would contribute to the consolidation of the entire region and prevent the Ottoman invasion. He tried to organize a crusade against the Ottomans, and in 1459 convened a meeting of the rulers of Europe in Mantua. The European rulers failed to endorse the crusade, and his desire to get into the war was never realized. He will be remembered as the only pope (ruler) who, in the 15th century, was willing to suppress the Ottomans in their invasion of the west. The bas-relief sculpture was created by sculptor Šime Vidulin from Pula, Croatia.
